You Can be What You Can’t See
You have heard the phrase “you can’t be what you can’t see”, haven’t you? Of course you have and without doubt, it certainly makes things harder if you don’t have leaders within your business who look like you. In a survey conducted by the CIPD in 2017, all BAME employees, regardless of ethnicity, were significantly more likely than white British employees to say that seeing other people like them who have progressed in the organisation would help boost their careers. No surprise here. Thing is, even though research has shown that increasing BAME participation in the top management roles can add £24billion to the economy annually, the numbers of BAME individuals in senior management roles, is small. And if you are a BAME women, the numbers are even smaller with little progression being achieved.
I am sure you have heard of the ‘double whammy’ experienced by BAME women? This is the experience of many BAME women who suffer the inequalities experienced by women as a whole – such as childcare and the gender pay gap – alongside racial inequalities and discrimination.
This 'double whammy' creates even more complex barriers that need targeted solutions.
So, what are you going to do? Are you going to wait until BAME women can be increasingly seen as key members of senior leadership teams? Wait until your employer finally recognises that it needs to do something to improve inclusion? Or are you going to harness all of your experience to date, your skills, your ambition and your positivity and embark on a leadership programme that will enable you to take your career to the next level?
And as an organisation, are you going to develop the BAME women in your company so they can be the role models of the future and enable you to build a culture that recognises potential and performance regardless of gender and race? The investment that you make now could very well make you an employer of choice.
As an Asian woman, I know what the challenges are. I know that some of these challenges come from within organisations but also, that some of our barriers really come from our personal life and from within ourselves. We prioritise everything but not ourselves. We struggle with our inner critic and automatically listen to the voices that tell us we are not good enough, clever enough, male enough, white enough.
This signature leadership development programme brings together everything that I have learnt as an HR leader, an ICF approved coach and as an Asian woman and will enable you to move forward in your career.
Eight coaching sessions, challenging conversations, insightful tools, powerful support and very real change for the better. You will understand much more about yourself than ever before and how to make progress towards your career goals. In the process, you will learn how to be successful without burning out. The programme runs over 6 months.
